How to Use the Cat Calorie Calculator

Understanding the formulas

• RER (resting energy requirement) is calculated as 70 × (weight in kg)0.75.
• MER (maintenance energy requirement) is RER multiplied by a life-stage factor.
• Factors are approximate: 1.2 for a neutered adult, higher for growing kittens and weight gain, lower for weight loss.
• Treat the numbers as a starting point and adjust with your veterinarian.
